Most types of cancers have screenings to identify the risk of the disease, but lack of screening for ovarian cancer has some women turning to preventative surgery.
Actress Angelina Jolie underwent preventative surgery to have her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed.
This decision was made after she found out she carried a gene that gave her a 50-50 chance of developing ovarian cancer. This move has people wondering if they should take the same preventative measure. To date there is no effective screening to identify ovarian cancer early. In fact 70 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed in an advanced stage. Preventative surgery is recommended for women that carry the gene, for women who are around 35 years old and are done having children. Having the surgery decreases your overall risk to 4 percent, but a side effect is onset menopause.
